Eagle Deluxe Wins $52,600 NCQHRA Futurity

Eagle Deluxe won the $52,600 North Central Quarter Horse Racing Association Futurity on Sunday at Canterbury Park. The 2-year-old quarter horse colt is trained by Jason Olmstead, who has now won this race each of the last four years. Berkley Packer was aboard the longshot that returned $25.00 to win in the nine-horse field. He also rode last year’s winner. Eagle Deluxe is owned by Tom and Bill Maher and Movin On.

“He’s always been really high on our list all along,” Olmstead said. Canterbury’s leading quarter horse trainer attributed his success in the NCQHRA Futurity to “good owners, good horses and a lot of luck.”

Five of the nine horses in the 350-yard race were trained by Olmstead. First of 15 finished third. Dickey Bob was fifth. I Told You I’m Fancy was sixth and Cannalytical was last. Vic Hanson trained the second-place finisher Marfilmio who finished 3/4 of a length behind the winner. Final time of the race was 17.849 seconds.

Hopes were high, six-figure-stakes-race high, for this colt from the start. Olmstead said the “high expectations didn’t pan out but at least we’re making up for it on this end.” Eagle Deluxe has won two of seven starts for $43,241 in purses. He also won the $18,000 Northlands Juvenile, a consolation for those that did not qualify to the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, on July 2.
